Trails In and Around Wolfeboro

Wolfeboro sits in a landscape built for hiking. The town itself has a 12-mile rail trail and several conservation areas, while the surrounding Ossipee and Belknap mountain ranges offer more challenging options within a 30-minute drive. Whether you're looking for a flat stroll with the family or a ridge walk with panoramic lake views, there's a trail for you.

Cotton Valley Rail Trail

Distance: 12 miles (out and back) · Difficulty: Easy · Surface: Paved and packed gravel

The Cotton Valley Rail Trail is Wolfeboro's signature trail and one of the best rail trails in New Hampshire. The flat, mostly paved path follows the old railroad corridor from downtown Wolfeboro through scenic countryside, crossing bridges and passing ponds along the way. It's accessible for strollers, wheelchairs (on the paved sections), and all fitness levels. Most visitors walk or bike a portion rather than the full distance — the first few miles from the Wolfeboro trailhead are especially scenic. The trail also connects to the broader Lakes Region trail network.

Abenaki Tower

Distance: ~0.6 miles round trip · Difficulty: Easy to moderate · Highlight: 360-degree panoramic views

Abenaki Tower is a fire tower on a wooded hilltop just outside Wolfeboro off Route 109. The trail to the top is short — only about 0.3 miles — but climbs steeply near the summit. The payoff is a 360-degree panoramic view from the tower platform that takes in Lake Winnipesaukee, Lake Wentworth, the Ossipee Range, and the distant White Mountains. It's one of the best views in the Lakes Region for the least amount of effort. Parking is limited to a small roadside pulloff, and the tower is free and open to the public.

Castle in the Clouds Trails

Distance: 1–5 miles (multiple trails) · Difficulty: Easy to moderate · Highlight: Waterfalls, lake views, historic estate

Castle in the Clouds offers a network of hiking trails on its 5,500-acre property in Moultonborough, about 20 minutes from Wolfeboro. Trails range from easy walks near the mansion to moderate hikes with views of Lake Winnipesaukee and Shannon Brook Falls. The estate itself — a 1914 mountaintop mansion — is worth a visit, and combining a tour of the house with a hike makes for a full half-day outing. Note that entrance to the estate grounds requires paid admission during peak season.

Sewall Woods

Distance: ~2 miles of trails · Difficulty: Easy · Highlight: Quiet forest preserve

Sewall Woods is a conservation area with gentle, well-marked trails through a peaceful mixed forest. It's popular with locals for morning walks and dog walking, and rarely crowded. The trails loop through hardwoods and softwoods with occasional views — a nice option when you want a low-key walk in the woods without driving anywhere far. Access is off Sewall Road.

Wentworth State Park Trails

Distance: ~1 mile of trails · Difficulty: Easy · Highlight: Lakeside walking

Wentworth State Park has short trails through the woods adjacent to its beach on Lake Wentworth. It's not a destination hike, but it's a pleasant add-on after a swim — a shaded loop through the forest with glimpses of the lake. The park charges a small day-use fee for the beach area.

Nearby Mountain Hikes

For hikers looking for more elevation and challenge, several excellent mountain trails are within a 20-40 minute drive:

  • Mount Shaw (Ossipee Range) — A moderate 4.5-mile round trip hike to a summit with sweeping views of Ossipee Lake and the surrounding mountains. Trailhead off Route 171 in Tuftonboro.
  • Mount Major — One of the most popular hikes in the Lakes Region. A 3.6-mile round trip with stunning summit views of Lake Winnipesaukee. Expect crowds on weekends. About 30 minutes south of Wolfeboro.
  • Belknap Range — A chain of peaks in Gilford offering multiple trail options and extensive ridgeline views. Gunstock Mountain and Belknap Mountain are the highlights.
  • Red Hill — A moderate 3.4-mile round trip hike in Center Harbor with a fire tower at the summit and arguably the best view of Lake Winnipesaukee. About 30 minutes from Wolfeboro.

Trail Tips

Most trails near Wolfeboro are well-marked and maintained. Bring water, wear sturdy shoes on anything beyond the Rail Trail, and apply bug spray from June through September — the Lakes Region's mosquitoes are persistent. Cell service can be spotty on mountain trails, so download offline maps if you're hiking the Ossipee or Belknap ranges. Dogs are welcome on most trails but should be leashed in conservation areas and state parks.
